Pre-Authorization Clerk
The Pre-authorization Clerk will be responsible for assisting Laboratory and Radiology departments with pre-authorizations for patient’s procedures and tests. The Pre-Authorization Clerk will communicate with patients and insurance companies to ensure ordered procedures and tests are allowable within the patients’ insurance plans. They will be responsible for scheduling ordered procedures and tests and registering patients upon arrival for these departments. The clerk maybe the first point of contact for patients; therefore, they are expected to be kind, courteous and professional in all interactions.


Education: High School Diploma or equivalent

Licensure: None Required

Work Experience: 1-2 years in a medical office setting, preferred

Freedom from illegal use of drugs, and freedom from use and effects of use of drugs and alcohol in the workplace.

Persons who have been found guilty by a court of law of abusing, neglecting or mistreating individuals in a health care related setting are ineligible for employment in this position.

Conduct self in a professional, courteous manner with co-workers, staff and the public in order to maintain a cooperative relationship among the healthcare teams. Must adhere to a philosophy and culture of teamwork and cooperation at all times.


Ability to build good working habits and relationships among patients as well as other departmental staff. Employee must demonstrate professionalism and competence when communicating with insurance companies.

Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards.

Provides all customers with an excellent service experience while maintaining confidentiality and financial information and demonstrating knowledge of and respect for the rights, dignity, and individuality of each patient in all interactions.

Scheduling and keeping appointments on schedule through patient reminders and notifying department personnel of patients’ arrival.

Complete all insurance pre-authorization requirements prior to patients’ scheduled appointments and notifying patient and department personnel of any delays in the process.

Ability to use Electronic Medical Record efficiently to extract necessary diagnosis codes and physician orders from the record to complete the pre-authorization process per each individual insurance company requirements.

Optimizes patients’ satisfaction, department’s time and utilization by prioritizing tasks based on scheduling.

Welcomes patients or visitors by greeting in person or on the phone in a positive manner.

Register patients for visits upon arrival in a timely and efficient manner.

Comfort patients by anticipating patients’ anxieties; answering questions; staying calm and reassuring patients during schedule delays due to emergency room patients.

Maintain accurate and up to date medical records by inputting or scanning necessary documentation into patients’ electronic medical record.

Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results, as needed.

Maintains operations by following policies and procedures; reporting changes, as needed.

Maintain waiting and reception areas.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Able to carry out the essential functions of this job (with or without reasonable accommodation) without posing specific, current risk of substantial harm to health and safety of self and others.

Make sure to drink plenty of water the night before your lab draw and take your regularly scheduled medication.

The patient is responsible for getting a copy of the lab results to their provider.
